Dream of Fire: a new exhibition with glassworks by Japanese artist Ritsue Mishima.
Pierre Marie Giraud is pleased to present Dream of Fire, a new gallery exhibition by Ritsue Mishima starting September 8. The Japanese glass artist will present a new series of artworks, for which the creative process of the glass itself served as an inspiration and a central topic. In a rapidly emerging career spanning more than two decades, Ritsue Mishima has developed an internationally acclaimed reputation as one of the most riveting and innovative artists working with the medium of glass. She is known for her organic forms which, despite being amorphous and irregular, are always perfectly clear, luminous and yet varied in terms of scale and technique. While transparency is often seen as one of the defining characteristics of her body of work, and is an aspect that lends it an undeniable coherence,Mishima is keen to emphasize that her work is far from colourless. On the contrary: she considers her work to be particularly colourful, as transparency truly is able to capture the most diverse colours and enables the glass to become pure light.Moving to Venice, Italy in 1989, Mishima embraced the interaction between the city’s many artisans and the constantly changing materials. But while most Venetian glass is richly tinted, she emphatically takes advantage of the substance’s high clarity. Unbound by convention,Mishima lets her creations melt into their surroundings, leaving only contours that lend a floating ethereal quality. Ritsue Mishima unceasingly challenges herself to explore the boundarie sof glass’s possibilities; and in doing so, she always finds new expressions that add a fresh perspective to an age-old craft. ‘Pure consciousness’ is what she replied when asked what she is looking for in a form. ‘A place of no answers, only the process of keeping passion alive and acting upon feelings.’
