"Vita Extremis" Lucy + Jorge Orta | "In perpetuity" Trong Gia Nguyen | "Pourquoi les Nuages pleurent-ils?" - Léo Orta
“Vita Extremis” - Lucy ORTA + Jorge ORTA
The Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valérie Bach is pleased to annonce Vita Extremis, a solo exhibition in the Great Nave of the gallery, dedicated to Lucy + Jorge Orta.
As part of the Brussels Gallery Weekend, the gallery will celebrate, from September 8th 2022, the thirty years of existence of this duo engaged in major global issues since 1992, and will unveil their latest series of paintings and textile creations, "Fabulae Florae", devoted to flora and the preservation of biodiversity.
Vita Extremis relates the exceptional itinerary of this innovative couple who breaks down the field of art to make it performative, a source of solutions and optimism in the face of social and environmental challenges (water, climate, migration, biodiversity...).
Vita Extremis orchestrates a bouncy, colourful and challenging journey alongside these "consciousness-raisers". The works on display bear witness to a prolific artistic production, which mixes utopia and activism around long-term meta-projects (Antarctica, Amazonia, OrtaWater, Clouds, Nexus Architecture...) explored through multiple media: sculpture, sewing, painting, silkscreening, photography, performance, drawing, video...
From the active community of 50,000 holders of the "Universal Antarctic Passport" (Antarctica project) to the work-machine "Zille Purification Unit" (OrtaWater project) which makes it possible to purify water, or the presentation of a certificate for the protection of the Amazonian forest when acquiring a work from the "Perpetual Amazonia" series (Amazonia project), the artists focus on the participatory dimension and empathy while uniting their audiences around an "eco-consciousness", enriching the common good through art.
Presented by the most important biennials (Venice, Gwangju, Johannesburg, Havana...), museums and art centres (Barbican Centre, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Pirelli Hangar Biccoca, MAXXi, Boijmans Museum...and next November at the Centre Pompidou-Metz), the duo has also carried out prestigious public commands (Saint Pancras train station, Marseilles Cultural Capital, European Capital of Culture in Friesland in the Netherlands, Emscherkunst in Germany...)
For this exhibition, the Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valérie Bach called on Alice Audouin, pioneer and specialist in the connection between contemporary art and the environment and founder of the association Art of Change 21. She has been collaborating with Lucy + Jorge Orta for more than 15 years and is currently exhibiting them as part of the Utopia Season ("Novacene" exhibition, Gare Saint Sauveur, Lille until 2 October, 2022).
“In Perpetuity”- Trong Gia Nguyen
La Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valerie Bach is pleased to present In Perpetuity, Trong Gia Nguyen’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. From incessant war to pervasive misogyny and the erosion of civil rights, the works assembled here focus on the normalcy of cruelty and endless cycles of treachery and violence. The exhibition is bookended by two series of paintings, one depicting a ridiculously long table, a la Putin, and the other a collection of bas relief, “guilty” height lines such as one might see at a police station.
“Why do Clouds cry?” - Léo Orta
La Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valérie Bach is pleased to announce a FOCUS on the second floor dedicated to the work of Leo Orta. The artist creates a dialogue with the solo exhibition dedicated to the work of his parents Lucy + Jorge.
The exhibition Why do the Clouds Cry? marks for Leo Orta, the continuation of his solo practice since his separation from the duo OrtaMiklos. The opportunity to present a new visual language.
This language, initially borrowed from the theoretical and conceptual training he received during his training at the Design Academy Eindhoven, has evolved towards a more poetic and critical approach to current environmental and social issues.
The works presented at La Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valérie Bach question our relationship to climate issues and our sensitive and emotional relationship to this emergency. These questions will be explored by Leo Orta through the juxtaposition of abstract and figurative elements figurative elements, specific to his practice.
They will also be addressed through Leo's sculptural approach to the furniture he creates. Leo Orta makes each of the works presented himself, borrowing from a variety of artisanal skills. The new works on display are composed of some of the materials emblematic of Leo Orta's practice, such as cardboard pulp, steel and acrylic paint, which will be complemented for the first time by mosaic and 3D printing techniques.

About La Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valérie Bach
The Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valérie Bach opened its doors in April 2015 in the world’s first roller skating rink which was built in 1877 and classified as a historical monument in 1995. We have created an open artistic program in three distinct fields structured around the female artist, monumentality and a strong aesthetic concern. The artists’ decisions preside over the exhibitions, materializing in their editorial selections which are then accompanied by the Patinoire’s international position, art fair participation and vast network of collectors. Furthermore, in response to our quasi-institutional qualification, the gallery chooses to present important historical exhibitions, highlighting the international, Belgian, and Modern Art movements such as narrative figuration, kinetic art or Belgian abstraction, both in sculpture and in painting.
