Haseeb Ahmed creates with Stock Weather a parallel between the global stock market and meteorological phenomena, examining the relationship between capitalism and the natural world. While the market is entirely manmade, we experience it as if it is a force of nature - as something that happens to us rather than something we have made.

The installation takes live data from major indices around the world including NYSE (US), TSE (Japan) and LSE (UK) to generate a weather pattern inside of the sculpture’s perimeter. This weather pattern is realized with programmed fans that act upon sand, modeling a desolate landscape that is a manifestation of the global economy. A camera focuses on these miniaturized sand dunes, creating a scaled-up filmic image that allegorizes global capitalism. In geography this is known as an aeolian landscape, a place formed by wind erosion. The desert landscape forms in the artwork, constantly fluctuating in accordance with the global economy.
