BGW | “Generation Brussels” Vernissage

BGW | “Generation Brussels” Vernissage

What is it?

Since 2018, Brussels Gallery Weekend and its galleries support the young Brussels artists by hosting the show “Generation Brussels”. The exhibition aims at highlighting young Brussels artists who have not yet been called by galleries.

Generation Brussels brings together a range of artists living and working in Brussels, whether they are art school students, recent graduates, aspiring artists or those with a little more experience. This year we have chosen to collaborate with Belgian Curator Sam Steverlynck, a Brussels-based art critic and curator.

What is the exhibition about?

The 2023 edition of Generation Brussels is entitled Cet obscur objet du désir (1977) as a tribute to the Spanish surrealist cinematographer Luis Buñuels eponymous masterpiece. This dark fable of lust and love was the last movie of one of the greatest subversive minds in cinema. The works on view do not specifically refer to the film’s theme, but rather to its ambivalent title, which unites contradictions between desire and repulsion, phantasms and impulses, the object and the abject, the familiar and the uncanny.
